What is EN 590 diesel?
EN 590 is the European standard for automotive diesel (automotive gas oil). It defines ultra-low sulphur (10 mg/kg max), a minimum cetane number of 51, density of 820–845 kg/m³ and up to 7% biodiesel (FAME) by volume.
What does 10 ppm mean?
A maximum sulphur content of 10 milligrams per kilogram — 10 parts per million. This is ultra-low-sulphur diesel (ULSD), required for modern engines with exhaust after-treatment and for lower sulphur-oxide emissions.
What is the cetane number of EN 590?
A minimum cetane number of 51.0 and a minimum cetane index of 46.0. Higher cetane means better ignition quality and smoother combustion.
Is EN 590 the same as ULSD?
EN 590 is the European spec for ultra-low-sulphur diesel. It and US ULSD (ASTM D975) both cap sulphur at 10–15 ppm, but differ on cetane, density, cold-flow and biodiesel limits. EN 590 is the grade most commonly traded internationally as "10 ppm" diesel.
